Today could have been decisive for Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel in their bid to land Everton winger Anthony Gordon, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.
Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that the west London club were pushing all weekend to get a deal for the 21-year-old done but could now be forced to turn to alternatives.
What is the latest news involving Gordon?
As per The Athletic, the chances of Chelsea signing Gordon before Thursday’s deadline are now slim.
Prior, the Evening Standard had reported that a £60m offer could tempt Everton into selling their youth product this summer.
However, Toffees manager Frank Lampard had also made it clear that there would be a point at this late stage of the transfer window where the Merseyside club would no longer consider sanctioning a sale, meaning Chelsea are running out of time.
Gordon was on the scoresheet for Everton over the weekend, netting in the 1-1 draw with Brentford to further demonstrate his importance to the Premier League outfit.
What has Jones said about Gordon to Chelsea?
Jones says Chelsea have been working hard over the last couple of days to sign Gordon and now have a big decision to make as Thursday’s transfer deadline draws closer.
Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: “Gordon, they’ve been pushing all weekend. Today does feel a little bit make or break, as they’ve got to decide whether they can go any higher or whether they give up and turn to alternatives.”
Who could Chelsea turn to if they miss out on Gordon?
Wilfried Zaha is another attacker who is currently being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
According to multiple reports, including from The Independent, Chelsea are considering a late bid for the Crystal Palace player.
He could be a really smart addition to the Blues’ squad given his contract situation and his Premier League pedigree.
The 29-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his existing deal at Selhurst Park so may be available for a reasonable fee, and he is someone who has proven that he can score and terrorise defenders in this country.
Last season, Zaha registered 14 goals in the English top flight and, over the last year, he has ranked in the 87th percentile for dribbles completed among attacking midfielders and wingers (via FBref).
If anything, the Ivory Coast international should probably be a priority for Chelsea over someone like Gordon. For whatever reason, though, he is not, but you suspect that could quickly change as Everton continue to play hardball with Gordon.
