- The gritty win ended United’s 7-game defeat streak away from home
- Fernandes has called on his teammates to continue their newfound form
Bruno Fernandes scored the goal to end Manchester United’s horrendous sequence of seven successive away defeats — and ordered more of the same.
‘One or two wins doesn’t make the league,’ said Fernandes after his volley, 10 minutes into the second half, clinched a 1-0 win at Southampton. ‘We have to carry on this spirit for the rest of the season. This is what this club demands.
‘I felt a big change in the group after Brentford. I felt straight away in training that we wanted to make a change in the way we play and in our results. After Liverpool, everyone could feel it. We set the standard so we have to carry on now and if we can, improve it.’

The Portuguese midfielder secured United’s first away win since February with his goal against Southampton on Saturday
Victory completes an encouraging week for United after starting the season with defeats by Brighton and Brentford.
They responded by beating Liverpool on Monday and overcame a spirited Southampton at St Mary’s to record back-to-back victories in the Premier League for the first time since February.
‘We did what we have to do,’ said Fernandes, who missed a good chance in the first half, a header from a cross by Diogo Dalot, which he nodded across goal to spark a crazy scramble and a flurry of blocks and saves in the Saints penalty area.
Fernandes said that United’s win over Liverpool improved morale within the squad after Erik ten Hag’s team suffered successive defeats to start the season
He made up for it, 10 minutes into the second half, when he applied a wonderful volley to another fine cross from Dalot, and praised the contributions from Anthony Elanga and Marcus Rashford.
‘It was a great ball,’ said Fernandes. ‘Great play from Anthony. Everything was perfect. Marcus makes the run and gets the space for me.
‘We want to win every game. That’s what it’s about to play for Manchester United.’
